Thanks to funding from a National Science Foundation   Small
Business Innovation Research (NSF-SBIR) grant, Dr. Henry Liu
was able to develop what the June 2007
Popular Science
Magazine called one of the “Top Ten Inventions of the Year.

Greenest Brick--The Brick of the Future
. . .
Leading the Brick Industry in Ecological Responsibility
  • Greenest Brick (trademark pending) is one of the major products of
Freight Pipeline Company (FPC)  which provides design and
engineering support to both existing companies and new companies who
have become Greenest Brick licensees. CalStar Cement  is the US
licensee and is currently building the first brick plant in Caledonia,
Wisconsin with production scheduled at the end of this year (2009).

  • Green manufacturing and Green buildings are both top priorities of
most nations including the United States. As quoted by a government
website, "Liu's innovative use of fly ash to manufacture high quality
building materials will potentially decrease some of the negative
environmental impact of coal-fired power generation while meeting
increasing demands for greener building materials."            --May 2007
NSF Press Release 07-058  100% Fly Ash Brick is the nation's
    "Greenest Brick" because . . .
  • it is made of pure fly ash (without having to add cement,
    sand,        aggregates, clay or binder),
  • it's kiln-free manufacturing process is emission free, in contrast
to the pollutants emitted by manufacturing clay bricks and
    cement
  • it eliminates waste disposal of fly ash and saves landfill space,
    and
  • it does not contribute to global warming--bypassing the need for
burning fossil fuel as required by clay brick kilns.

  • Meeting LEED Requirements--Greenest Brick will help meet LEED
    requirements
  • Transportation Efficiency--Greenest Brick factories can often be
located next to coal-fired power plants. In doing so, the fly ash can be
transported by pneumatic conveying directly from the power plant to the
brick factory without having to use trucks, and the products (Greenest
Bricks) can be shipped out using the same railroad that deliver the coal
    to the power plant.
  • Cleaner Air—In a government sponsored research project, it was found
that the Greenest bricks instead of leaching minute amounts of mercury
as some researchers had predicted, the bricks do the reverse –
adsorbing toxic metal out of ambient air, making the ambient air cleaner
    – see 2007 World of Coal Ash paper, "Test of Mercury Vapor Emission
    from Flyash Bricks."
